Pass the intersection marked by Coco Marina Center and walk up the hill to find the entrance to Hanauma Bay.
If you are traveling by bus, take the number 22, also in Waikiki, starting at Kalakaua Avenue in the lane heading to the ocean side.

Then just get off at the Hanauma Bay bus stop and the ocean is right there.

 

Ala Moana Beach

Lanikai means Lani (heaven) and Kai (ocean) in Hawaiian, and this is what people call a heavenly beach.

Lanikai Beach is filled with powdery pure white sand, the texture of which is very pleasant to the eyes and feet.

Despite such beauty, it is fortunate to be located further back than Kailua Beach, where the crowds are relatively calm and quiet.

As mentioned above, Lanikai Beach is located at the far end of the walking path from Kailua Beach.

You can park your car at the Kailua Beach parking lot and walk along a straight road for about 15 minutes to get there, making it a must-visit spot.

 

Ko Olina Beach

Next, let's check out a slightly more secluded spot, Ko Olina Beach on the west coast.

The word "Ko Olina" means "blissful" in Hawaiian, and the area now known as Ko Olina Beach was a resort reserved exclusively for the ancient Hawaiian authorities.

If you are renting a car, first enter the highway H1 westbound.

Follow the road past the end of the road to H201 West and continue on toward Waianae.

If you get off at the sign that says Ko Olina, you will be able to reach Ko Olina.

 

sandbar

If you want to encounter one of the rarest and most beautiful views on Oahu, an island blessed with ocean and beach, you must visit the Sandbar.

Sandbar is the name given to a spot known as "Phantom Island," which refers to a small sandy beach just offshore from Kaneohe Bay.

It has the interesting feature of peeking out of the sea only during low tide, and is called a phantom island because of its limited hours.

 

Recommendations

The white sand that forms the sandbar is coral sand, derived from the calcareous nature of coral bones.

Because the sand is made of calcareous material, its color is truly pure white.

The contrast between the blue sea and the blue sea is so beautiful that it is hard to believe that it is out of this world, and although the area is small, visitors never cease to come to visit.

You can reach it by following the same route to Kailua and traveling along the oceanfront road a little west of Kailua Beach.

 

Waimanalo Beach

Waimanalo Beach, which I will introduce next, is located on the southeast side of Oahu.

Since this place is also located on the same coast as Kailua and Lanikai beaches, it is safe to say that the blue color and clarity of the ocean is outstanding.

The main character of this place is the view from the sandy beach that offers a broad sweep of Rabbit Island, whose shape is said to resemble a rabbit, and Mokulua Island off the coast of Lanikai.

 

Recommendations

Waimanalo Bay Beach, located right next to Waimanalo Beach, was named one of the best beaches in the United States in 2015.

Nevertheless, we chose to feature this beach instead of Waimanalo Bay Beach because of its local atmosphere and the fact that it is less crowded.

It is less crowded because it is somewhat less well known, and yet it is right next to the beach, so the beauty of the environment is no less beautiful.

Enjoy the original Hawaiian mood at this beach loved by the locals.

 

Access

If you are traveling by rental car, the route is the same as the one to Hanauma Bay.

After passing Hanauma Bay, continue through the residential area past a place called Sea Life Park, and you will eventually see Waimanalo Beach on your right.

 

North Shore

Many people may associate Oahu with surfing.

The North Shore, which refers to the northern coast of the island, is the area of Oahu where surfing is particularly active.

There are several beautiful beaches scattered throughout the area, which are often collectively referred to as the North Shore.

 

Recommendations

Due to ocean currents and winds, the North Shore waters are subject to violent waves in the wintertime.

Such an environment is extremely favorable for surfers, and it is a winter tradition that many surfers visit the North Shore as a sacred place.

If you are driving from Waikiki in a rental car, you can reach the North Shore by following the H1 to H2 highways and Kamehameha Highway.

Or, if by bus, take bus #52 at the Kapiolani Avenue + Piikoi Street bus stop near Ala Moana Center.

The rest of the way will take you toward the North Shore, and you can get off at the location of your choice to arrive.

 

Kualoa Beach

Kualoa Beach, which I would like to introduce next, is located in the northeastern part of Oahu.

The beach is characterized by the Kualoa Regional Park, a park with excellent facilities.

The beach itself seems a bit narrow, but it stretches wide horizontally, making it a long beach over 1 km long.

 

Recommendations

What is unique about the view from Kualoa Beach is that a small island called Chinaman's Hat is visible.

The island is popular for its cute shape, which is slightly raised, and together with the blue ocean, it may make for a photogenic photo opportunity.

Kualoa Regional Park has a well-maintained lawn and campgrounds, and the main attraction is the ability to enjoy picnicking and camping in conjunction with playing in the ocean.

Access

If you are renting a car from Waikiki, take highway H1 and take Exit 20A in the direction of Likelike Highway.

Follow the road to H3 and take the exit to the right toward Kahekili Highway.

Eventually, you can reach Kualoa Regional Park around where Chinaman's Hat comes into view at the end of the ocean.

On the other hand, if you are taking a bus, go to Ala Moana Center first.

If you take bus No. 55, you can go directly to the bus stop in front of Kualoa Regional Park without transferring.

 

Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park

Check out the popular Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park from the North Shore, shown above.

Ask any local what they think of Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park and you will hear that it is a great surfing spot.

The waves on the North Shore are very rough and most of the surfing is for advanced surfers, but the waves here are relatively easier than on the North Shore.

This spot is also known as the gateway to success for those making their North Shore debut.

 

Recommendations

Now, Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park is a major attraction for those who are not into surfing.

The sea and sandy beaches are beautiful, of course, but the main point of interest here is the sea turtles.

It is known as a beach visited by sea turtles due to its favorable environment, and on a fine day, you can even see adorable sea turtles basking in the sunlight on the sand!

However, keep in mind that sea turtles are considered sacred creatures in Hawaii, and it is forbidden by law to harm or even scare them by approaching them unnecessarily.

 

Access

If you are traveling by rental car from Waikiki, take Highway H1 to H2 and then to Kamehameha Highway.

Take the road toward Waimea and once you get to Haleiwa Road, turn right there and you will reach Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park.

If by bus, take bus #52 from Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Get off at the bus stop in front of Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park.

 

Waimea Beach

Next, I would like to introduce a unique spot, Waimea Beach, which is full of duality, changing its appearance from summer to winter.

In summer, Waimea Beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other relaxing activities, as the waves are calm thanks to the cove topography.

In winter, however, the beach is transformed into a ferocious beach with terrifyingly large waves, and becomes a spot where surfers can be seen daring to challenge themselves.

 

Recommendations

The greatest character of Waimea Beach is probably the winter one.

Waves coming from the northern Aleutian Islands to Waimea Beach are extremely fierce, often reaching heights of 20 meters.

The difficulty of the event makes it an interesting point to see professional-level surfers taking on the challenge.

It is also a tradition at Waimea Beach to see people watching the surfers from high above, so if you visit in the winter, you may want to join them.

 

Access

Waimea Beach is on the road to Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park, and both rental cars and buses have the same directions.

Waimea Beach is in front of the beach over there, so don't miss it.

 

Sunset Beach

Next, we would like to introduce you to Sunset Beach, the most popular beach on the North Shore.

A major feature of Sunset Beach is the beauty of the sunset, as its name implies.

The unobstructed view of the ocean provides an excellent vantage point from which to watch the beautiful Oahu sun set into the horizon and the ocean turn a brilliant sunset color.

 

Recommendations

Such a sunset beach is an extremely good place to enjoy swimming, with excellent facilities such as showers, toilets, and changing rooms.

With many photogenic spots, this is the perfect beach to enjoy the ocean of Oahu.

Also, as is the case with the North Shore waters, the surfers gather here in the winter when the waves are stronger.

As the site of the Vans World Cup, where the world's top professionals battle it out, there is a constant flow of visitors to the area throughout the year.

 

Access

Both the rental car and bus routes are identical to the route to Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park up to the halfway point.

If you are renting a car, you may be able to reach Sunset Beach by continuing in the direction of the bypass at Waimea.

Take the 52 bus at Ala Moana Center, and when you get off at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park, move to the opposite lane and change to the 55 bus.

After another 20 minutes on the bus, you will see the bus stop in front of Sunset Beach, which is the goal.

 

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach, the last beach we will introduce, has a reputation for its sand quality.

The name "Sandy Beach" comes from the word "sandy," meaning "sandy," and the fine white sand stretching 500 meters will give you a strong sense of the tropical atmosphere.

Another major feature of Sandy Beach is that it is one of the best bodyboarding spots on Oahu.

A little further on, Sandy Beach stretches in the direction on the right.

As with the buses to Hanauma Bay, take bus #22 from the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue.

Just past Hanauma Bay, there is a bus stop in front of Sandy Beach.

 

What to expect when you go to the beach

Oahu's beaches are uniformly blessed with very beautiful locations, but there are a few things to keep in mind when playing on these beaches, which are so foreign to the rest of the world.

The first priority is to recognize that even the paradise-like resort island of Oahu has many spots that are not as safe as those in Japan.

We could list places that are particularly risky, such as the western part of the island or non-touristy areas of Honolulu, but it is important to have a sense of risk no matter where you go.

Rental cars used by tourists are particularly vulnerable to car theft, so it is a good rule of thumb when traveling to Oahu not to leave your wallet, passport, and other necessities in the car.

Another thing to keep in mind is the intensity of sunlight.

The sunlight in tropical Oahu is much stronger than in Japan, and if you are not careful, you can quickly get a strong sunburn.

It would be a shame to suffer from a painful sunburn during an enjoyable trip, so be sure to prepare a sunscreen that blends well with your skin.
