冬（おおむね11月〜3月ごろ）のノースショアは大きなうねりが届く季節で、ワイメアビーチはビッグウェーブで世界的に有名なんですよ。

波が高い日はライフガードが遊泳や飛び込みを制限することがあるため、無理に海へ入らず、迫力ある波を砂浜から眺めるのがおすすめです。

エディ・アイカウとはどんな人物？

エディ・アイカウは、ワイメアビーチでライフガードを務め、荒れた冬の海で多くの人を救ったことで知られるサーファーです。

当時は水上バイクのような救助機材がなく、ボードひとつで海に出て救助にあたったといわれています。

1978年、航海用のカヌーでタヒチへ向かう途中に船が転覆し、助けを呼ぶためサーフボードで陸を目指したまま行方不明The company is now in the process of

残された乗組員は救助されましたが、彼の勇気は今も語り継がれています。

「Eddie would go（エディなら行く）」という言葉は、困難に立ち向かう勇気の象徴として、ハワイで親しまれています。

エディをたたえて開かれているのが、通称「The Eddie（エディ）」と呼ばれるビッグウェーブのサーフィン大会です。
